“Those closest to the problem are closest to the solution, but furthest from resources or power,” says award-winning attorney Brittany K. Barnett. Spurred on by the experience of her mother and the injustices faced by her clients, Ms. Barnett has dedicated her life and career to driving comprehensive reform in the criminal justice system.
Combining multiple nonprofits, impact investing practices, advocacy, and authorship, Ms. Barnett’s strategy for pushing back against mass incarceration is as multi-faceted as the challenge of comprehensive reform. All of her work unites under a highly personal, humanized, transformative perspective on systemic change.
Her legal work has already resulted in freedom for numerous people serving fundamental death sentences for federal drug offenses, all while her nonprofits advocate for change and help strengthen family support and open doors to reentry for those incarcerated. In September, her book A Knock at Midnight, will be published by a division of Penguin Random House.
Join us online as award-winning attorney, entrepreneur, author, and investor Brittany K. Barnett shares her experience of battling for hope, reform, and freedom against a criminal justice system that was designed to resist them all.

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. During our 2020 Social Innovation Luncheon Series, we celebrate the progress that our communities have made toward equity, while we also call attention to the work that remains undone. Our first three luncheons of the series are specifically focused on systematic barriers in the workplace that have detrimentally affected the success and prosperity of women for generations.
